Extrapulmonary TB: a 30-year observational study of an Italian cohort [ENG]

It is estimated that about a quarter of the global population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and TB remains a leading cause of death worldwide.1 While low-income countries report the majority of TB cases, it is essential to prioritise TB management in high-income, low TB burden countries to prevent any delays in diagnosis and treatment.2–4 In addition to pulmonary TB (PTB), the diagnosis and management of extrapulmonary TB (EPTB), which accounts for about 15–20% of TB cases, is particularly challenging due to the atypical presentation and the complex differential diagnosis.5 We conducted a study to describe a large cohort of patients with EPTB diagnosed and/or treated in the metropolitan area of Milan, Italy, a low TB burden country, to evaluate epidemiology, resistance patterns and clinical outcomes.
